Football Preview: Cigarroa Toros vs. Jay Mustangs

The Cigarroa Toros will take on the Jay Mustangs at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

While Cigarroa is heading in to the matchup without a win, things might be looking up considering their last game was the closest they've come to getting one. They were three points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 21-18 heartbreaker at the hands of Winn. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Toros have suffered since August 30, 2024.

Loss or not, Cigarroa got some senior leadership from Armando Mata and Jonathan Dominguez. Mata rushed for 91 yards and one TD, while Dominguez gained 161 total yards. Dominguez also set a new season-high mark in receiving yards with 116.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Jay). They blew past Winn 44-13 last Friday. With the Mustangs ahead 30-0 at the half, the contest was all but over already.

Jay found their leader in sophomore Brennan Oliver, who rushed for 141 yards and three scores on only 12 carries. Oliver's longest rush was for an impressive 58 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total.

Jay was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 200 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 150 rushing yards every time they've taken the field this season.

Jay's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 4-1. Those home wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 9.0 points on average over those games. As for Cigarroa, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-6.

Cigarroa was taken down by Jay 49-0 when the teams last played back in October of 2024. Thankfully for the Toros, Nicholas Rios (who rushed for 131 yards and a pair of touchdowns) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
