Baseball Game Preview: Chula Vista Spartans vs. Kearny Komets

Chula Vista is a perfect 3-0 against Kearny since March of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Chula Vista Spartans are taking a road trip to challenge the Kearny Komets at 4:00 p.m. Chula Vista will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each matchup than the last.

Chula Vista not only won on Tuesday, but they posted their biggest win since April 30, 2024. They were the clear victor by a 16-3 margin over Hoover. The Spartans' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

Brandon Lucero made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out eight over four innings pitched. Lucero was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring four runs while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances. Those four runs gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Julian Martinez and Angel Verdejo did most of the damage at the plate: Martinez scored four runs and stole a base while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances, while Verdejo scored three runs while going 3-for-5. The dominant performance gave Martinez a new career-high in runs. Joe Alterado also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.

Meanwhile, Kearny was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat dating back to last season. They lost 13-5 to Olympian.

DJ Martinez led a balanced group of hitters, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-3. Chris Davila was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.

Kearny's loss dropped their record down to 0-3. As for Chula Vista, the win got them back to even at 3-3-1.

Chula Vista was able to grind out a solid victory over Kearny in their previous meeting back in March of 2024, winning 5-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for Chula Vista since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
