The De Beque Dragons will face off against the Vail Christian Saints at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. De Beque is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 56.4 points per game this season.
Last Tuesday, De Beque lost to Plateau Valley at home by a 61-46 margin. The defeat continues a trend for the Dragons in their matchups with the Cowboys: they've now lost seven in a row.
De Beque might have lost, but man, Burke Largent was a machine: he posted 27 points. That was a full 58.7% of De Beque's points, marking the fourth time in a row Largent has earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jace Graham, who scored six points and 15 boards.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Vail Christian, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Wednesday. They walked away with a 59-46 win over North Park on Saturday.
De Beque better focus on containing Jack O'Shaugnessy and Wyatt Fisher as the pair were huge in Vail Christian's win. O'Shaugnessy dropped a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds, while Fisher went 7-for-16 on his way to 24 points and six boards. The dominant performance gave Fisher a new career-high in points. Another player making a difference was Asher Leonard, who had four points and six rebounds.
Vail Christian was working as a unit and finished the game with 16 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as North Park only posted six assists.
De Beque's loss dropped their record down to 13-7. As for Vail Christian, they now have a winning record of 8-7.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: De Beque has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 32.2 boards per game. However, it's not like Vail Christian struggles in that department as they've been averaging 29.5 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
De Beque strolled past Vail Christian when the teams last played back in January of 2024 by a score of 69-55. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Leonard, who went 7-for-13 to rack up 15 points in addition to six boards and four steals. Now that he's got a second chance to win this matchup, will De Beque still be able to contain Leonard? There's only one way to find out.
