Softball Game Preview: Scott Skyhawks vs. Wayne Pioneers

The Scott Skyhawks will face off against the Wayne Pioneers at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Scott's pitching crew has only allowed 2.7 runs per game this season, so Wayne's hitters will have their work cut out for them.

Scott is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of West Virginia's top teams: Lincoln County, who was ranked 16th at the time (Scott was ranked ninth). Scott came up short against Lincoln County on Friday, falling 7-0. The Skyhawks were red-hot at the plate heading into the matchup (they scored no less than ten runs in the three games prior), but the Panthers' pitchers proved too tough.

Scott saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kambri Beard, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base.

Meanwhile, after low-scoring totals in their previous three contests, Wayne brought some dynamite into their most recent contest. They walked away with a 10-5 victory over South Point on Friday. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Pioneers as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.

The team relied heavily on Kylee Copley, who scored two runs while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. She also put up a double, which was her first of the season. Alexa Bishop was another key player, scoring a run while going 1-for-4.

Scott's loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 5-2. As for Wayne, their victory bumped their record up to 2-3.

Wayne's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Scott has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .452. It's a different story for Wayne, though, as they've only averaged .341. Will they be able to contain Scott's hitters?

Scott took their win against Wayne in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 9-1. Will Scott repeat their success, or does Wayne has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
