Baseball Game Preview: Wayne County Cardinals vs. Somerset Briar Jumpers

The Wayne County Cardinals will head out on the road to challenge the Somerset Briar Jumpers at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

On Monday, Wayne County didn't have quite enough to beat Clinton County and fell 4-3. The Cardinals have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Somerset, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Saturday. They put the hurt on Russell County with a sharp 10-0 win on Monday. The victory continues a trend for the Briar Jumpers in their matchups with the Lakers: they've now won three in a row.

Kole Grundy was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over six innings pitched. He has been consistent for a while: he hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double. He has become a key player for Somerset: the team is 3-1 when he posts at least three RBI, but 11-19 otherwise.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Connor Roberts, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one triple. That's the most runs he has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Jacob Estep, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double.

Somerset was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .520. They are 2-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Wayne County's defeat dropped their record down to 19-10. As for Somerset, their record is now 14-20.

Wayne County got the 'W' in their previous meeting back in March against Somerset by a conclusive 14-4 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cardinals since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
