Softball Recap: Gwynedd Mercy Academy Takes a Loss

Gwynedd Mercy Academy extended their losing streak to three on Monday, dropping their season record down to 1-10 in the process. They lost 17-0 to the Central Bucks East Patriots. While getting shut out isn't ideal, the Monarchs haven't been shut out since back in March.

As for Central Bucks East, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 8-5. Give their pitching crew some credit: that's the team's third straight shutout.

For Central Bucks East's part, Sarah Zmuda made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Zmuda has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

In other pitching news, Lyla Becker looked comfortable as she pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

Back at the plate, Hailey Helmstetter was a standout: she went a perfect 3-for-3 with four runs, four RBI, and one double. She is on a roll when it comes to hits, as she's now got three or more in each of the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Maggie Funston, who went 2-for-3 with four runs, two stolen bases, and two RBI.

Gwynedd Mercy Academy and Central Bucks East could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Pennsylvania Rankings. The Monarchs (ranked 438th) will meet Merion Mercy Academy (ranked 158th) at 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Central Bucks East will face off against Central Bucks South at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday with a big rank disadvantage (265 vs. 96).
