Football Recap: Ventura Cougars vs. Camarillo Scorpions
Ventura unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-field advantage in their season opener. They took a 36-31 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Camarillo Scorpions on Thursday. The Cougars were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Scorpions apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in August of 2024.
Ava Ortman and Mya Rodriguez certainly did their best on Thursday to avoid the loss. Ortman threw for 335 yards and five TDs, while Rodriguez picked up 214 receiving yards and a pair of scores. Rodriguez also put in work on the defensive side of the ball, making two total tackles and defending two passes. Riley Hotzler was in the mix as well, providing Ventura with two touchdowns.
Even if they lost, Ventura's defensive line still kept up the pressure with four sacks. In fact, those sacks all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Amani King.
Camarillo's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Alexandra Hughes, who picked up 67 receiving yards and a pair of scores. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaeah Blaney, who threw for 195 yards and one TD.
Ventura will have a little extra prep time after the defeat as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Newbury Park at 7:00 p.m. on the 26th. As for Camarillo, they have already played their next game, a 33-20 win against Westlake on the 16th.
