Basketball Recap: Cuba Piles Up the Points Against East Mountain

You're bound to get a positive result if you outscore your opponent every quarter, and that's exactly how it played out for Cuba on Thursday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that they blew the East Mountain Timberwolves out of the water with a 68-30 final score. The Rams have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won eight matchups by 20 points or more this season.

Cuba's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Denale Sandoval led the charge by dropping a double-double with 18 points and ten rebounds. That's the most points Sandoval has posted since back in December of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Cara Toledo, who dropped a double-double with 15 points and ten boards.

Cuba smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive rebounds. They pulled down eight more offensive boards than East Mountain's also-impressive total of ten.

Despite the loss, East Mountain had strong showings from Maya Cheney, who dropped a double-double with 11 points and ten rebounds, and Jodie Tillman, who had seven points along with five boards and three steals.

Cuba is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight games. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-13 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 57.8 points over those games. This is the second loss in a row for East Mountain and nudges their season record down to 7-17.

Looking ahead, Cuba will take on Sandia Prep at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Sandia Prep will roll in looking for their sixth straight win, something Cuba surely won't give up without a fight. East Mountain does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
