Football Recap: Mount Vernon Tigers vs. Rains Wildcats
Mount Vernon fought the good fight in their overtime contest against Rains on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They took a 42-35 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Rains Wildcats. The Tigers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Wildcats apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in October of 2023.
Despite the loss, Mount Vernon still got an impressive performance from Dawson Witherspoon, who picked up 26 receiving yards and four touchdowns, and also rushed for 131 yards. Witherspoon's rushing production has been exceptional recently as that marked his third straight game with at least 131 rushing yards dating back to last season.
Mount Vernon didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Carsen Summerlin and Brayden Baker. Mount Vernon got some further help from Abraham Ciraiz: he picked up a sack and made four total tackles (4.0 for loss).
This one was won in the trenches and the lion's share of the credit has to go to Jabari Shields and he. Coincidentally, both will both be playing Winnsboro the next time they take the field. Rains will head out to face Winnsboro at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, while Mount Vernon will host them at 7:00 p.m. on October 25th.
