Baseball Recap: Elmwood Takes a Loss

Elmwood dropped their record down to 14-5 on Thursday, which also ended the team's three-game streak of wins at home. They fell just short of the Patrick Henry Patriots by a score of 2-0. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Royals of the 6-5 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2024.

Zackery Gross spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned runs on eight hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in five consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Elmwood saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Landon Snow, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base.

As for Patrick Henry, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 6-8 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games.

On Patrick Henry's side, Cal Schroeder made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Schroeder was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run.

Elmwood will look to defend their home field on Friday against Ottawa Hills at 5:00 p.m. The Green Bears will roll in looking for their sixth straight win, something the Royals surely won't give up without a fight. As for Patrick Henry, they will head out on the road to face off against Holgate at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
