The Mount Carmel RED TORNADOES will challenge the Wellsboro Hornets at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Mount Carmel is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.2 runs per game this season.
While Mount Carmel's win against Shamokin Area wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The RED TORNADOES' pitchers stepped up to hand the Indians a 2-0 shutout on Thursday. The RED TORNADOES haven't had any issues with the Indians recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive victory against them.
Walker McGinley looked comfortable as he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits.
On the hitting side, Mount Carmel's win was truly a team effort as three different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Clarke Cartright, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with two RBI.
Meanwhile, Wellsboro entered their tilt with Addison on Tuesday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They were the clear victors by a 17-0 margin over the Knights. Considering the Hornets have won eight matches by more than nine runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
The team relied heavily on Cameron Owlett, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. He has become a key player for Wellsboro: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 8-9 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Maxwell Mascho, who got on base in two of his three plate appearances with two runs and two RBI.
Wellsboro was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .571. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .300 or higher in six consecutive games.
Wellsboro pushed their record up to 11-9 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.6 runs on average over those games. As for Mount Carmel, their victory bumped their record up to 14-4.
Saturday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Mount Carmel hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .324. However, it's not like Wellsboro struggles in that department as they've averaged .327. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Mount Carmel took their win against Wellsboro when the teams last played back in May of 2023 by a conclusive 11-1 score. Will the RED TORNADOES repeat their success, or do the Hornets have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
