Baseball Recap: Marquette Beats Westwood for Their Second Straight Win

Marquette barely beat Westwood the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Redmen's pitchers stepped up to hand the Patriots a 10-0 shutout on Thursday. The Redmen might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three matches by seven runs or more this season.

Jake Toyras made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, he posted three strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ian Sheltrow, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs. He has become a key player for Marquette: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 1-2 otherwise. Gib Jezewski was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one double.

The win made it two in a row for Marquette and bumps their season record up to 4-2. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 0 runs in those games. As for Westwood, they are on a six-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-3.

Looking ahead, Marquette will challenge Houghton at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Westwood, they will face off against Gwinn at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
