Baseball Game Preview: Cape Henry Collegiate Dolphins vs. Collegiate Cougars

The Cape Henry Collegiate Dolphins will square off against the Collegiate Cougars at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Collegiate took a loss in their last matchup and will be looking to turn the tables on Cape Henry Collegiate, who comes in off a win.

Cape Henry Collegiate is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. Their pitchers stepped up to hand Norfolk Collegiate a 15-0 shutout on Thursday. The Dolphins not only won on Thursday, but they posted their biggest win since April 23, 2024.

Baylen Newcomb looked comfortable as he struck out nine batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and not a single walk). Those nine strikeouts gave him a new career-high.

On the hitting side, Cape Henry Collegiate let Colin Lebel and Reid Downs run wild. Lebel scored a run while going 1-for-1, while Downs scored two runs while going 1-for-1. Downs is becoming a predictor of Cape Henry Collegiate's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 2-1 (and 4-5 when he doesn't). Owen Hawley was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two RBI and one double.

Cape Henry Collegiate was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .389. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in four consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Collegiate faced Miller School of Albemarle in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Thursday. The Cougars lost 11-4 to the Mavericks. The Cougars' loss signaled the end of their four-game winning streak.

Collegiate's defeat dropped their record down to 6-3. As for Cape Henry Collegiate, the win got them back to even at 6-6.

Cape Henry Collegiate beat Collegiate 3-0 when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Will the Dolphins repeat their success, or do the Cougars have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
