Basketball Recap: Willcox Piles Up the Points Against San Simon

While Willcox didn't have the best season last year (they finished 10-18), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They took their game on Monday with ease, bagging a 56-23 win over the San Simon Longhorns. The Cowboys have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won four contests by 25 points or more this season.

Willcox got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was JD Whetten out in front who went 5 of 12 en route to 11 points and five steals. Whetten is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last five games he's played. Another player making a difference was Ty Shull, who posted eight points in addition to five rebounds and four steals.

Willcox smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 22 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in 13 consecutive matchups dating back to last season.

Willcox's win was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 6-4. As for San Simon, their loss dropped their record down to 3-7.

Willcox will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Benson at 7:00 p.m. on January 7, 2025. As for San Simon, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 41-33 defeat against Duncan on the 17th.
