Branford is 1-9 against Guilford since April of 2017 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Hornets will host the Grizzlies at 4:15 p.m. Branford is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.1 runs per game this season.
Branford is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 22 runs on Saturday, they were much more limited against East Haven on Monday. They came up short against the Yellowjackets, falling 9-2.
Branford saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Tatum Lipka, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Mikenna Leigh also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
The home team had won the previous four meetings between Guilford and Sacred Heart Academy, and Guilford kept the tradition alive. The Grizzlies narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Sacred Heart Academy 6-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Grizzlies have posted since May 1, 2024.
Sarah O'Brien made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she pitched seven innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off ten hits. O'Brien was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one home run.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ava Eagleson, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with three stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. Kennadie Tansey was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double.
Guilford's victory bumped their record up to 3-4. As for Branford, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-5.
Guilford's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Wednesday. Branford has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.4 strikeouts per game.
