Baseball Recap: Harper Woods Takes a Loss

Harper Woods had lost three straight at home, but on Thursday they dropped their record down to 4-6 to make it four. They lost 17-2 to the Ferndale Eagles. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Eagles this season, with their most recent loss being a 16-8 defeat on Tuesday.

Kameron Garfield made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double.

As for Ferndale, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 5-5. That 15 run margin sets a new team best for them this season.

On Ferndale's side, Matthew Trumpy made a big impact no matter where he played. He struck out seven batters over four innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits (and not a single walk). Trumpy has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up a single walk in four consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all five of his plate appearances with two runs, two RBI, and one double.

In other batting news, Jaylin Dennard and Mason Shaltis did most of the damage at the plate: Dennard got on base in four of his five plate appearances with five stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI, while Shaltis went 2-for-5 with four RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. Dennard continues to improve, besting his previous run total in each of the last three games he's played. Tremaine Bynum also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.

Harper Woods and Ferndale could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Michigan Rankings. The Pioneers will challenge Seaholm at 4:30 p.m. on Monday with a big rank disadvantage (327 vs. 15). Meanwhile, Ferndale (ranked 239th) will meet Lutheran Northwest (ranked 47th) at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
