Softball Game Preview: Erie-Prophetstown Panthers vs. Orion Chargers

Erie-Prophetstown is 9-1 against Orion since March of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Panthers will square off against the Chargers at 10:00 a.m. Erie-Prophetstown is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.1 runs per game this season.

On Tuesday, Erie-Prophetstown made easy work of Newman Central Catholic and carried off an 8-2 win. The victory continues a trend for the Panthers in their matchups with the Comets: they've now won eight in a row.

Wynn Renkes spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on four hits and racked up 13 Ks.

On the hitting side, Erie-Prophetstown let Jaylynn Hamilton and Isabelle Olvera run wild. Hamilton went 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run, while Olvera went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. Those three RBI gave Hamilton a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Lilly Swatos, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Erie-Prophetstown kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They are 7-1 when they post 11 or more hits.

Meanwhile, Thursday just wasn't the day for Orion's offense. They came up short against Rockridge on Thursday, falling 15-0. The Chargers just can't catch a break and have now endured three losses in a row.

Orion's defeat dropped their record down to 9-20. As for Erie-Prophetstown, their win bumped their record up to 11-9.

Everything went Erie-Prophetstown's way against Orion in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, as Erie-Prophetstown made off with a 19-13 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Panthers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
