Basketball Recap: Alessia Chaves-Torres Key Part of a Team Effort in Bobcats Win

It was a proper cat-fight when Buchholz took on Newberry on Thursday. The Buchholz Bobcats walked away with a 64-54 win over the Newberry Panthers. The victory was all the more spectacular given the Bobcats' disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 209th, while the Panthers are ranked 65th).

Buchholz's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Alessia Chaves-Torres, who went 6 for 13 en route to 19 points. Chaves-Torres continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Kennedy Wyckoff, who went 7 of 14 on her way to 19 points.

Newberry's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Brandy Whitfield, who went 8 for 15 en route to 21 points, and Destiny Neal, who dropped a double-double on ten points and ten boards. Whitfield is crushing it when it comes to points: she's scored at least 15 every time she's taken the court this season. Jada Brown was another key player, putting up nine points and five assists.

Buchholz's win bumped their record up to 7-11. As for Newberry, the defeat snapped their winning streak at nine games and leaves them with a 14-5 record.

Buchholz didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 53-40 loss against West Port on the 31st. Newberry has also already played their next contest, a 66-33 defeat against Gainesville on the 31st.
