June Thomas tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run over five innings pitched. He also tossed no walks, which is notable because Union Pines is 4-2 when he allows at most one walk, but 2-6 otherwise.
On the hitting side, Willy Rivera was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March. Dylan Benedict was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances.
Union Pines was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .462. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in four consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, Thursday just wasn't the day for Southern Lee's offense. They lost 12-0 to Apex on Thursday. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Cavaliers, who until this contest were averaging 3.87 runs allowed.
This is the second loss in a row for Southern Lee and nudges their season record down to 10-5. As for Union Pines, their record now sits at 6-8.
Both the two teams just can't seem to miss. Union Pines has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 8.8 hits per game. However, it's not like Southern Lee struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 5.6 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Union Pines was able to grind out a solid victory over Southern Lee when the teams last played back in April of 2024, winning 9-4. Do the Vikings have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Cavaliers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
