Softball Game Preview: Colfax Falcons vs. Oakmont Vikings

The Colfax Falcons will head out on the road to challenge the Oakmont Vikings at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Colfax has given up an average of 11.9 runs per game this season, but Thursday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Colfax managed to slip by Wheatland the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. Colfax came up short against Wheatland on Tuesday, falling 21-1. The Falcons' loss continues a trend for the team, making it four in a row.

Meanwhile, Oakmont got the win against Marysville on Wednesday by a conclusive 8-2. Considering the Vikings have won three matchups by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

McKenna Dutto spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on four hits and racked up six Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Chloe Gomes and Maria Gonzales did most of the damage at the plate: Gomes scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3, while Gonzales scored two runs and stole three bases while going 3-for-4. Kayla Freeze was another key player, scoring two runs while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances.

Oakmont was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .423. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .344 or higher in four consecutive contests.

Oakmont's record is now 6-4. As for Colfax, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-6.

Colfax suffered a grim 9-1 defeat to Oakmont in their previous meeting back in March of 2015. Can Colfax avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
