Basketball Recap: Cheyenne Sweeney's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Patriot over Freedom

After flying high against Osbourn last Friday, Patriot came back down to earth. The Patriot Pioneers took a 41-37 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Freedom Eagles. While losing is never fun, the Pioneers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 294th, while the Eagles are ranked 128th).

Patriot's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Cheyenne Sweeney, who posted 13 points in addition to seven rebounds and five assists. That's the most assists Sweeney has posted since back in November of 2023. Angel King was another key player, going 5 for 10 en route to 11 points and seven boards.

Sweeney wasn't the only one working in the assists department: Patriot was working as a unit and finished the game with 12 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Patriot has traveled a rocky road recently having lost nine of their last ten contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-11 record this season. As for Freedom, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 6-4.

Patriot has already played their next matchup, a 66-45 victory against Mountain View on the 23rd. Freedom has also already played their next game (against Osbourn), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
