8A District 11 recap September 24, 2013
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Taravella, who defeated 119th ranked South Plantation, 20-14.
The Trojans scaled the state rankings by moving to 129 from 190 this week, the biggest jump in 8A District 11. Taravella was able to move up by besting the Paladins 20-14.
Jesse Barrows and Travis Liburd gave Piper a balanced attack in passing and rushing last week. Barrows threw for 21 yards and 15 touchdowns, while Liburd ran for 203 yards. Teammate Barrows added to the ground attack by rushing for 52 yards.
Barrows and Liburd gave the Bengals a balanced attack through the air and ground last week.
Liburd was the best running back in the league this week.
Corey May was the best wideout in the league this week as Douglas fell to Deerfield Beach. May tallied 4 receptions for 75 yards. Tate Lehtio helped Douglas' passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 47 yards.
Brett Israel was a passing and rushing force as the Eagles lost to the Bucks. He completed 11 passes for 162 yards and 3 touchdowns and also ran for 46 yards.
Barrows put up the best numbers in passing as Piper lost to Monarch. Barrows' favorite target this week was Zoharian Williams, who caught 2 passes for 25 yards.
He went 2-8 with 1 interception.
Douglas' Israel and Lehtio have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 8A District 11 in both passing and receiving yards. Israel has thrown for 544 yards this season, while Lehtio, a 5-foot-11 receiver, has 13 catches for 174 yards. Roger Mitchell's team's Liburd leads the league in rushing yards with 569.
An important game coming up in the league this week will be when Willis May's team takes on the Knights. As it stands, the Eagles are in third, while Monarch is in first.
Calvin Davis' team added to the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating the Bengals, 39-13. The victory was the fourth in a row for the team.
