Baseball Game Preview: Escondido Cougars vs. Oceanside Pirates

The Escondido Cougars will take on the Oceanside Pirates in a tournament on Tuesday. Oceanside took a loss in their last matchup and will be looking to turn the tables on Escondido, who comes in off a win.

Escondido is coming home in high spirits after they had to open their season on the road against Morse. Escondido was the clear victors by a 17-3 margin over Morse on Saturday. The Cougars have beaten the Tigers the last three times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Tigers has come to flipping the script.

Ryder Taylor made a big impact no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out six over five innings pitched. That's the fewest hits he has allowed since back in April of 2024. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Andrew Carrilo, who went 3-for-5 with three stolen bases, two triples, and three runs. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in triples. Ace Sanchez was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-5.

Meanwhile, after a string of three wins dating back to last season, Oceanside's good fortune finally ran out on Saturday. They came up short against San Ysidro, falling 9-2.
