Preview: Corner Canyon Chargers vs. Copper Hills Grizzlies

Corner Canyon is on a four-game streak of home wins (dating back to last season), while Copper Hills is on a 11-game streak of away wins (dating back to last season): one of those streaks is about to end. The Corner Canyon Chargers will take on the Copper Hills Grizzlies at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Hopefully Corner Canyon focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 16 on Tuesday.

Last Tuesday, Corner Canyon was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 55-50 to Herriman. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Corner Canyon in their matchups with Herriman: they've now lost four in a row.

Despite the defeat, Corner Canyon got a solid performance out of Elina Mortensen, who scored 20 points along with eight rebounds. Mortensen is on a roll when it comes to points, as she's now scored 15 or more in the last 11 games she's played. Another player making a difference was Maia Rhay, who scored 11 points along with five steals.

Meanwhile, Copper Hills faced Mountain Ridge in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Copper Hills came out on top against Mountain Ridge by a score of 52-41 on Tuesday. 52 seems to be a good number for Copper Hills as the team scooped up a victory with the same number of points in their previous game.

Ayla Marston was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 21 points and 11 rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points she has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Skylie Barker, who scored eight points along with five rebounds and two steals.

Corner Canyon's loss dropped their record down to 10-5. As for Copper Hills, their win bumped their record up to 15-0.

Keep an eye on the arc in Thursday's contest: Corner Canyon have made nailing deep shots look easy this year this season, having only averaged 5.4 threes per game. However, it's not like Copper Hills struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 5.5 threes per game. Given Corner Canyon's sizeable advantage in that area, Copper Hills will need to find a way to close that gap.

Corner Canyon came up short against Copper Hills when the teams last played back in December of 2022, falling 46-42. Can Corner Canyon avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
