4A Region I District 2 recap Sept. 26, 2012
Del Valle moved up to 478 from 627 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 4A Region I District 2. The Conquistadores climbed the ranks as a result of a 34-0 win over Parkland.
Riverside was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from ninth to third in the league. The Rangers defeated Ysleta 2-0 earlier in the week.
Horizon's dynamic duo of Jesus Flores and Hilario Soto proved tough for Canutillo to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Flores threw for 363 yards and two touchdowns and Soto had 146 yards receiving. Adomaitis Valenzuela helped Horizon's passing attack out by catching four balls for 104 yards.
DAVID ARMENDARIZ was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 140 yards on 18 carries as Eastlake beat the Eagles.
Horizon's Flores and Soto have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 4A Region I District 2 in both passing and receiving yards. Flores has thrown for 819 yards this season, while Soto, a 5-foot-10 receiver, has 16 catches for 387 yards. San Elizario's Danny Calderon leads the league in rushing yards with 462.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Hanks takes on the Falcons. The Knights are currently in second, while Eastlake is in fifth.
Riverside and the Indians played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Riverside eventually emerging with a 2-0 victory. ERIC JARAMILLO in the win.
