Flag Football Recap: Ventura Takes a Loss

Despite a strong season so far, Ventura has seen their luck take a bit of a downturn recently. They received a blow on Thursday as they fell 41-25 to the San Marcos Royals. The defensive woes were uncharacteristic for the Cougars, who until this game were averaging 14.92 points allowed.

When it comes to explaining why Ventura lost, don't look at Ava Ortman. Despite the final result, she threw for 307 yards and three TDs while completing 72.7% of her passes, and also rushed for 61 yards and one score on only eight carries. Ortman has been hot recently, having posted three or more passing touchdowns the last four times she's played. Kaiya Cooke was Ortman's top target, picking up 68 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Ventura's loss dropped their record down to 17-8. As for San Marcos, the victory (which was their tenth in a row) raised their record to 21-3.

Ventura and San Marcos should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. The Cougars will challenge Rio Mesa at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday with a big rank advantage (39 vs. 257). Meanwhile, San Marcos (ranked 12th) will meet Pacifica (ranked 310th) at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
