Basketball Game Preview: Essex Trojans vs. Westmoreland Eagles

Essex has won three straight games at home, while Westmoreland has won three straight on the road, but those streaks won't matter much on Thursday. The Essex Trojans will host the Westmoreland Eagles at 7:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Essex is headed into the game after thoroughly thrashing Lancaster: they outscored them in every quarter. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that Essex blew Lancaster out of the water with a 53-16 final score. The Trojans pushed the score to 42-14 by the end of the third, a deficit the Red Devils had little chance of recovering from.

Essex's win on Tuesday was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Morgan Self, who dropped a double-double on 22 points and ten rebounds. Self is also on a roll when it comes to blocks, as she's now posted two or more in the last nine games she's played. Aryeon Robinson was another key player, putting up ten points along with five assists and four steals.

Essex was working as a unit and finished the game with 17 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in January of 2024.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Westmoreland). They blew past Northumberland, posting a 56-23 victory. Given the Eagles' advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 154th, while the Indians are ranked 324th), the result on Thursday wasn't entirely unexpected.

Essex has also been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight matchups, which provided a massive bump to their 10-6 record this season. As for Westmoreland, their win bumped their record up to 14-1.
