Basketball Recap: St. Anne's-Belfield Falls Short of Bishop Ireton in the Playoffs

It's hard to turn regular season success into postseason wins, a fact St. Anne's-Belfield can now relate to. They received a blow on Friday as they fell 71-53 to the Bishop Ireton Cardinals. The Saints were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Cardinals apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in March of 2023.

Despite the defeat, St. Anne's-Belfield saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Harmony Williams dropped a double-double with 36 points and ten boards. The match was Williams' fifth in a row with at least 16 points. Keegan Morris was another key player, putting up five points.

Bishop Ireton had a senior duo take command as Amirah Anderson went 6-for-10 from beyond the arc to rack up 23 points in addition to seven assists and seven rebounds and Nyla Brooks shot 4-for-6 from long range and dropped a double-double with 18 points and 11 boards. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Anderson has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Theresa Hagans JR, who shot 46% from the field en route to 13 points.

With the loss, St. Anne's-Belfield broke their four-game winning streak and moved their record to 21-2. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 69.8 points over those games. As for Bishop Ireton, they are on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 27-6 record this season.

St. Anne's-Belfield does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Bishop Ireton, they have already played their next game, a 58-51 win against Paul VI on the 1st.
