Football Game Preview: Wheatmore Warriors vs. Providence Grove Patriots

The Wheatmore Warriors will take on the Providence Grove Patriots at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Wheatmore and West Davidson meet (four straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Friday. The Warriors fell 14-7 to the Dragons. Having soared to a lofty 32 points in the game before, the Warriors couldn't push the score so high this time.

Meanwhile, Providence Grove waltzed into their game on Friday with three straight wins... but they left with four. They took down the Golden Eagles 32-14. The Patriots pushed the score to 29-7 by the end of the third, a deficit the Golden Eagles cut but never quite recovered from.

Wheatmore better keep an eye on Nick Straughn. He was instrumental in Providence Grove's win, rushing for 151 yards and one TD while picking up 8.4 yards per carry. Jackson Lawver was another key player, rushing for 84 yards and one score on only 11 carries.

Providence Grove was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 250 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.

Providence Grove didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Holden Swift, Andrew Thomas, and Conner Haithcock picked up one apiece.

Wheatmore's loss dropped their record down to 1-7. As for Providence Grove, their win bumped their record up to 6-2.

Wheatmore might still be hurting after the 43-19 defeat they got from Providence Grove when the teams last played back in November of 2024. That matchup was all but decided by halftime, at which point the Warriors were down 30-6.
