Baseball Recap: Wood-Ridge Beats Leonia for Their Fourth Straight Win

Wood-Ridge came tearing into Tuesday's matchup with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top against the Leonia Lions by a score of 4-1. The Blue Devils have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Lions, too.

Lucas Mendoza made a splash while hitting and pitching. He tossed seven innings while giving up just one earned run off six hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one stolen base and one run. Those three hits gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Nick Scalera was excellent, going 1-for-2 with two runs and one stolen base. He has become a key player for Wood-Ridge: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 6-7 otherwise. Nicolas Mabel was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two RBI.

Wood-Ridge's victory bumped their record up to 10-7. As for Leonia, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-13.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Wood-Ridge will welcome Midland Park at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday. As for Leonia, they will be playing in front of their home fans against St. Mary at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Gaels' pitching crew has only allowed 3.8 runs per game this season, so the Lions' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
