Basketball Recap: Grand Canyon Takes a Loss

If Grand Canyon was feeling good fresh off their 58-16 takedown of Rough Rock on Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Grand Canyon Phantoms were dealt a 57-21 loss at the hands of the Ash Fork Spartans on Friday. The Phantoms were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Spartans apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in January of 2024.

When it comes to explaining why Grand Canyon lost, don't look at Jaemie Jensen. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 19 points and 14 boards. Jensen's afternoon made it ten games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points.

Isabella Acosta continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Ash Fork, dropping a double-double on 23 points and ten steals. That makes it three consecutive games in which Acosta has scored at least a third of Ash Fork's points. Andrea Vazquez was another key player, putting up nine points and four steals.

Grand Canyon's loss dropped their record down to 9-11. As for Ash Fork, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests, which provided a nice bump to their 13-8 record this season.

Grand Canyon will host Seligman at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Grand Canyon is facing Seligman at the right time seeing as Seligman is stuck on a six-game losing streak. As for Ash Fork, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 48-42 victory against Red Mesa on the 1st.
