Basketball Recap: Hertford County Takes a Loss

Hertford County played a tough contest on Thursday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They were outmatched by the First Flight Nighthawks and fell 60-25. While losing is never fun, the Bears can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 353rd, while the Nighthawks are ranked 48th).

Despite the loss, Hertford County still got an impressive performance from Karae' Alfred, who posted seven points along with seven boards and three blocks. Belle Wadsworth was another key player, putting up four points and six steals.

First Flight found their leader in sophomore Maddy Beatson, who shot 5-for-8 from beyond the arc and dropped a double-double on 26 points and 11 steals. Those 11 steals gave Beatson a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Abby Miles, who went 7 of 16 on her way to 16 points and four steals.

Hertford County has traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-6 record this season. As for First Flight, the win keeps them at an undefeated 8-0.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Hertford County and Camden County will meet on Thursday for a tough Bear Battle. As for First Flight, they will take on Holmes at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. First Flight knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past four games -- so hopefully Holmes likes a good challenge.
