Cannon has gone 9-1 against Providence Day recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Tuesday. The Cannon Cougars will welcome the Providence Day Chargers at 5:30 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
Cannon will head into Monday's game on the come-up: they were handed a 36-point loss in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene two weeks ago. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 62-60 victory over Rolesville. Given the Cougars' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked ninth, while the Rams are ranked 57th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Cannon found their leader in sophomore Madison Drayton, who dropped a double-double on 24 points and 11 boards. Another player making a difference was Maya Mccorkle, who posted nine points and three steals.
Cannon smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 21 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in ten consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, Providence Day entered their tilt with Charlotte Country Day School on Saturday with three consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with four. They blew past the Buccaneers 60-36. The Chargers have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won eight contests by 22 points or more this season.
Providence Day's win came from a few key players Cannon will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Ginny Anne Dumont, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 12 rebounds. Those 12 boards gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Julia O?Malley, who made all 5 shots she took to post 11 points and seven rebounds.
Providence Day has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 14 of their last 15 games, which provided a nice bump to their 16-6 record this season. As for Cannon, their win bumped their record up to 14-5.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Cannon has crashing the boards this season, having averaged 32.8 boards per game. However, it's not like Providence Day struggles in that department as they've been averaging 28.2 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
