Basketball Recap: Zayveian Johnson's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Rapides over Holy Savior Menard

Rapides fought the good fight in their overtime match against Holy Savior Menard on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They wound up with the same score they had in their last game (66-63), but sadly the team found themselves on the wrong side of the score this time. They lost against the Eagles in their previous head to head back in January of 2023, too, but the margin this time around was much closer than the 68-33 score last time.

Rapides lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Zayveian Johnson, who posted 22 points and seven boards. That was a full 34.9% of Rapides' points, marking the ninth time in a row he's put up more than a third of the team's points. MC Harris was another key player, putting up 18 points along with five assists and five rebounds.

Even though they lost, Rapides smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in four consecutive games.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Holy Savior Menard to victory, but perhaps none more so than Peyton Procell, who dropped a double-double on 24 points and 11 boards. Procell is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as he's now pulled down eight or more in the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Baylor Smith, who had 17 points and five assists.

Rapides' record is now 6-12. As for Holy Savior Menard, their win bumped their record up to 7-17.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Rapides will take on Oak Hill at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in Oak Hill's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last three contests. As for Holy Savior Menard, they will face off against St. Joseph's - Plaucheville at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
