Softball Recap: Vardaman Triumphs

Vardaman's game last Monday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Tuesday. They skirted past the Winona Tigers 15-13. The high-scoring effort was just what the Rams needed considering they were shut out in their previous game.

Addi Lucius made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over 5.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and five unearned) runs off two hits. Lucius was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing Two bases. while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances. The dominant performance gave her a new career-high in stolen bases.

In other batting news, Haley Parker was a standout: she scored three runs while going 4-for-5. Those four hits gave her a new career-high. Lyla Chandler was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-4.

Vardaman kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 17 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

Vardaman pushed their record up to 8-3 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to strikeouts: they averaged an imposing seven strikeouts in those games compared to only 4.13 in the others. As for Winona, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost seven of their last eight contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-8 record this season.

Vardaman will have a chance to go back-to-back against Winona: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
