Baseball Game Preview: Poughkeepsie Pioneers vs. Gorton Wolves

The Poughkeepsie Pioneers will head out to face off against the Gorton Wolves at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.

Poughkeepsie is headed into Tuesday's game looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their fifth straight game dating back to last season on Wednesday. They lost 20-10 to East Ramapo [Ramapo/Spring Valley]. That's two games in a row now that the Pioneers have lost by exactly ten runs.

Meanwhile, Gorton had to kick off their season on the road on Wednesday, but they showed no ill effects. They put the hurt on Yonkers Montessori Academy with a sharp 13-5 victory. The Wolves haven't had any issues with the Eagles recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.

Abdiel Almanzar was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Those eight strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances.

In other batting news, Aaron Hernandez was incredible, scoring four runs and stealing four bases while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. Those four runs gave him a new career-high. Julius Vargas was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances.

Poughkeepsie beat Gorton 4-1 in their previous matchup back in May of 2023. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Pioneers since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
