Basketball Recap: Sugar Creek Charter Takes a Loss

Sugar Creek Charter's last matchup with Jackson Day could've gone either way, but unfortunately the same can't be said for the pair's matchup on Tuesday. The Wildcats came up short against the Mariners, falling 73-52. While losing is never fun, the Wildcats can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 472nd, while the Mariners are ranked 232nd).

Despite the loss, Sugar Creek Charter still got an impressive performance from Derek Thomas, who dropped a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Mukaba Wossa was another key player, putting up seven points.

Leading Jackson Day to victory were Alexander Hector-Davis and Malachi Lewis. Hector-Davis went 6-for-11 en route to 13 points and six steals, while Lewis shot 40% from the field to rack up 15 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Elijah Davis, Jr, who posted six points.

Sugar Creek Charter has been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-8 record this season. As for Jackson Day, their victory ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 8-6.

Coming up, Sugar Creek Charter will be home for the holidays to greet Bonnie Cone Leadership Academy at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The Wildcats will be up against the Eagles' rather soft defense (which has allowed 63.5 points per game), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for Jackson Day, they will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Carolina International at 7:00 p.m. on January 6, 2026.
