The Niwot Cougars will head out to square off against the Longmont Trojans at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Niwot is coming into the match on a four-game losing streak.
Niwot is headed into the contest having just suffered their closest loss since April 25, 2024 on Saturday. They fell just short of Riverdale Ridge by a score of 5-3.
Charlie Shaw was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-3 with three RBI and one triple. Another player making a difference was Drew Stapp, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one double.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Longmont). They were the clear victors by a 12-2 margin over Frederick on Thursday. The Trojans haven't had any issues with the Golden Eagles recently, as the game was their third consecutive victory against them.
Bryce Smaic spent all five innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned runs on four hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Robbie Sekich, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-3. That's the most runs he has posted since back in April of 2024. Travis Check also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
Longmont was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .417. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Frederick only posted a batting average of .267.
Longmont's win was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-1. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.5 runs on average over those games. As for Niwot, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-5.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Niwot has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Longmont struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.6 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Everything went Niwot's way against Longmont in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, as Niwot made off with a 10-1 win. Does Niwot have another victory up their sleeve, or will Longmont turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
