Softball Recap: Botkins Comes Up Short

Botkins had lost four straight on the road, but on Monday they dropped down to 14-11 to make it five. They took a 10-7 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Covington Buccaneers. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Trojans, who until this matchup were averaging 3.6 runs allowed.

Kambree Walters and Peyton Platfood stepped up to the plate in a big way. Walters went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double, while Platfood went 2-for-4 with three runs.

As for Covington, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 22-6 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.0 runs over those games.

On Covington's side, Whitney Burns spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned (and two unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up eight Ks. Burns has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Jayda McClure was incredible, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Cassidy Iddings, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and three RBI.

While Botkins had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
