Rowan County has gone a perfect 3-0 against Estill County recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Vikings are taking a road trip to challenge the Engineers at 5:30 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Rowan County has four straight wins, Estill County has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
On Thursday, Rowan County was able to grind out a solid victory over West Carter, taking the game 17-14.
The team relied heavily on Brody Lykins, who went 3-for-5 with four RBI, one run, and one double. Aaron Pennington was another key player, going 3-for-5 with three stolen bases and two runs.
Rowan County was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .528. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, Estill County came up short against Breathitt County on Wednesday and fell 6-3.
Hayden Woolery was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one run. Another player making a difference was Mason Griggs, who went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Rowan County pushed their record up to 16-7 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for Estill County, their defeat dropped their record down to 9-8.
Friday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Rowan County hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .349. However, it's not like Estill County struggles in that department as they've averaged .314. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Rowan County skirted past Estill County 3-1 in their previous matchup back in March. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Vikings since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
