Soccer Game Preview: Mt. Vernon vs. Pinckneyville

The Mt. Vernon Rams will head out to challenge the Pinckneyville Panthers at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Mt. Vernon has given up an average of 2.5 goals per game this season, but Thursday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Mt. Vernon lost 8-2 to Marion on Tuesday. While losing is never fun, Mt. Vernon can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Illinois soccer rankings (they are ranked 311th, while Marion are ranked 79th).

Meanwhile, Massac County kept up with Pinckneyville until halftime on Friday, but afterwards: not so much. The Panthers never let the Patriots get on the board and left with a 5-0 victory. It was an even better day for Hannah Halsted as she scored four goals for her team.

The win made it two in a row for Pinckneyville and bumps their season record up to 11-6-1. Those victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only given up zero goals over those two matches. As for Mt. Vernon, they now have a losing record of 8-9.

Mt. Vernon suffered a grim 4-0 defeat to Pinckneyville in their previous meeting back in March. Can the Rams avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
