Recap: Whiteville Wolfpack vs. East Columbus Gators
After flying high against the West Columbus Vikings last Friday, the Whiteville Wolfpack came back down to earth. Whiteville took a 48-42 hit to the loss column at the hands of East Columbus. While losing is never fun, Whiteville can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 413th, while East Columbus is ranked 69th).
When it comes to explaining why Whiteville lost on Wednesday, one person who can't be blamed is Elayzia Dawson. Despite the final result, she scored 21 points along with three steals. That was a full 50% of Whiteville's points, marking the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Ceonna Dennis, who scored seven points along with eight rebounds.
Whiteville has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost six of their last eight matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-8 record this season. As for East Columbus, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 10-1.
Whiteville will be playing in front of their home fans against East Bladen at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. East Bladen knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past three contests -- so hopefully Whiteville likes a good challenge. As for East Columbus, they will head out on the road to square off against Heide Trask at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Heide Trask is coming into the contest on a three-game losing streak.
