Softball Recap: Rio Mesa Takes a Loss

Rio Mesa fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Dos Pueblos on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Chargers by a score of 8-7. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Spartans of the 3-1 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in March of 2024.

Analia Lopez was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 13 batters over nine innings while giving up seven earned (and one unearned) runs off 11 hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than 11 strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with three runs and two doubles.

In other batting news, Keira Barry made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and got on base in four of her five plate appearances with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. Jazlynn Gonzalez was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

Rio Mesa's defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 8-1 and their overall record down to 13-6. As for Dos Pueblos, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 9-8 record this season.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Rio Mesa beat Dos Pueblos by a score of 5-4 on Friday.
