Baseball Game Preview: South Pittsburg Pirates vs. Polk County Wildcats

The South Pittsburg Pirates will square off against the Polk County Wildcats on Thursday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (South Pittsburg has three straight wins, Polk County has six straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

South Pittsburg is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. Everything went their way against Lookout Valley on Tuesday as South Pittsburg made off with a 14-1 victory. The Pirates not only won on Tuesday, but they posted their biggest win since April 15, 2024.

Kaden Baker made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out seven over four innings pitched. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, scoring three runs while going 2-for-3. He also hit a double, marking his first of the season.

In other batting news, South Pittsburg got a big performance out of Jace Stone, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3. Those three runs gave Stone a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Bailey Fults, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4.

South Pittsburg kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Lookout Valley only managed six hits.

The home team had come away the winner the last five times Polk County and Tellico Plains had met, but sadly for the fans who attended this one that wasn't the case. Polk County took a 6-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of Tellico Plains on Tuesday.

South Pittsburg's win bumped their record up to 3-5. As for Polk County, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-4.
