Basketball Recap: Connor Stevens' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Concord over Union City

Concord suffered their closest defeat since February 28, 2024 on Thursday. They fell just short of the Union City Chargers by a score of 52-49. The Yellowjackets were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Chargers earlier this season, when they won 59-47.

Concord lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Connor Stevens, who dropped a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Concord is 10-3 when Stevens posts ten or more boards, but 3-6 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Jett Smith, who posted 17 points.

Even though they lost, Concord smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in three consecutive contests.

Elijah Payne was his usual excellent self, on his way to 21 points and six rebounds for Union City. What's more, Payne also posted a 67% field goal percentage, which is the highest he's achieved since back in February of 2024. Another player making a difference was Jason Shoop, who earned 11 points.

Concord's loss dropped their record down to 13-9. As for Union City, they have been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight games. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-7 record this season.

Concord does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Union City, they have already played their next matchup, a 78-36 defeat against Lumen Christi Catholic on the 22nd.
