Sandhills Valley was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their 32nd straight defeat dating back to last season. They took a hard 62-45 fall against the Maxwell Wildcats. One positive for the Mavericks, at least, is that this was the most points they've scored all season.
Despite the loss, Sandhills Valley saw an underclassman step up: freshman Avery Weems posted 20 points. That was a full 44.4% of Sandhills Valley's points, marking the third time in a row she's put up more than a third of the team's points. Rhayana Bruns also deserves some recognition as she posted her first block of the season.
Madelyn Flock was nothing short of spectacular for Maxwell: she went 8 for 20 en route to 25 points. Those 25 points gave Flock a new career-high. Kristyn Cheek was another key player, almost dropping a double-double on nine points and ten rebounds.
Sandhills Valley's defeat dropped their record down to 0-11. As for Maxwell, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 8-8.
Sandhills Valley will challenge Anselmo-Merna at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Anselmo-Merna is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 53.9 points per game this season. As for Maxwell, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 55-26 win against Hitchcock County on the 24th.
