Football Game Preview: Wickliffe Blue Devils vs. Springfield Tigers

The Wickliffe Blue Devils will take on the Springfield Tigers at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few points on average (Wickliffe 14.4, Springfield 10.8) so any points scored will be well earned.

Wickliffe will bounce into Friday's contest after beating Crestwood, who they had gone 0-3 against in their three prior meetings. The Blue Devils strolled past the Red Devils with points to spare on Friday, taking the game 31-14.

Meanwhile, after only six points in their last matchup, Springfield made sure to put some points up on the board against Lowellville on Friday. The Tigers took down the Rockets 33-19.

Springfield found their leader in sophomore Marco Gentile, who picked up 1.5 sacks, forced one fumble, and made nine total tackles.

On the defensive side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Springfield's defense and their six sacks. Evan Mericle refused to say out of the backfield, picking up 2.5 sacks all by himself. Springfield received some extra help from Dominick Jones, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.

Springfield is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven games. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 7.3 points on average over those games. As for Wickliffe, their win bumped their record up to 8-2.
