Basketball Game Preview: Decatur Eagles vs. Eastern Hills Highlanders

Two dominant guards in Javen Colbert and Messiah Miller are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Decatur Eagles are taking a road trip to face off against the Eastern Hills Highlanders at 8:00 p.m. on Monday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Last Tuesday, Decatur made easy work of Bridgeport and carried off a 79-57 win. Given the Eagles' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 199th, while the Bulls are ranked 847th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Colbert continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, going 10-for-18 from beyond the arc on his way to 44 points and four steals. His evening made it 15 games in a row in which he has scored at least 17 points. Another player making a difference was Adan Gonzalez, who posted 11 points along with five assists and three steals.

Meanwhile, it was a classic East v. West duel when Eastern Hills duked it out with Western Hills on Tuesday. Eastern Hills claimed a resounding 75-43 victory over Western Hills. The win continues a trend for the Highlanders in their matchups with the Cougars: they've now won six in a row.

Decatur pushed their record up to 26-8 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to offensive rebounds: they averaged an imposing 13 offensive boards in those games compared to only 13 in the others. As for Eastern Hills, their win bumped their record up to 19-8.

Decatur strolled past Eastern Hills in their previous meeting back in February of 2021 by a score of 71-53. Will Decatur repeat their success, or does Eastern Hills have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
