League recap: Florence climbs in standings with win

Florence was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from fourth to second in 2A Tri-Peaks. The Huskies defeated La Junta 27-13 earlier in the week.

Florence extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating the Tigers, 27-13. The victory was the fifth in a row for Mark Buderus' team.

Alamosa's dynamic duo of Zach Meyer and Bailey Garcia proved tough for Dolores Huerta Prep to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Meyer threw for 220 yards and one touchdown and Garcia had 80 yards receiving. Jacob Heaton helped Alamosa's passing attack out by catching seven balls for 64 yards.

Ben Breier was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 10 carries, he ran for 152 yards as St. Mary's defeated the Scorpions. Teammate Logan Elliott added to the ground attack by rushing for 143 yards.

Alamosa's Meyer and Heaton have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 2A Tri-Peaks in both passing and receiving yards. Meyer has thrown for 1578 yards this season, while Heaton, a 5-foot-8 receiver, has 50 catches for 555 yards. Chris DeAngelis from Trinidad leads the league in rushing with 1108 yards.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Miners take on Manitou Springs. Trinidad is in third place, while the Mustangs are in first place.

The Huskies were able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after beating La Junta. Florence came in at 25 in the state poll after placing at number 31 last week.
