Football Game Preview: Virginia City vs. Excel Christian

If the MaxPreps national rankings hold true, the near future looks bright for Virginia City. On Saturday they take on Excel Christian at 1:00 PM. With a combined 1076 yards in their previous games, we can expect a fast-paced match.

Virginia City faced Whittell in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Virginia City steamrollered Whittell 64-22. No one put up better numbers for Virginia City than senior Joe Avendano, who brought his A game into the match. He rushed for 215 yards and 3 touchdowns. One of the most memorable plays of the contest was Avendano's 72-yard touchdown rush in the second quarter.

Meanwhile, Excel Christian might have drawn first blood against Sierra Lutheran last Saturday, but it was Sierra Lutheran who got the last laugh. Excel Christian took a 28-35 hit to the loss column at the hands of Sierra Lutheran. Despite 221.8 more yards than Sierra Lutheran, Excel Christian could not convert that extra yardage to scores.

Virginia City's win lifted them to 5-1 while Excel Christian's defeat dropped them down to 3-4. The Virginia City defense got after the quarterback against Whittell to the tune of nine sacks, so Excel Christian's offensive line better have put in some good practice this past week in preparation for the matchup.
